PRODUCT DETAIL

Made with 6.5D (Denier) ripstop nylon, the lightest in the world, this Functionality parka fits in the palm of your hand.

6.5D threads are just 1/8 the thickness of a human hair. The fabric woven from this super-fine thread is astonishingly light, making the product only 72g in weight, approximately 1/3 the weight of a normal T-shirt.

It fits compactly in a breast pocket and is extremely portable in size at just 9.5cm X 6.5cm X 2.5cm, about the size of the palm of your hand.

This parka is extremely compact and dries quickly after washing, making it easy to carry about casually for travel or leisure. It can also be used on a regular basis to protect against over-air-conditioning in the spring and summer, to stay warm in the fall and winter, or to protect against sudden rain or strong sunlight at any time of year. The light fabric allows ease of movement and its natural elasticity makes it even more comfortable to wear.

Ripstop nylon is nylon fabric which is woven in a lattice shape. Nylon fibers are strong and extremely resistant to wear, making ripstop stronger by an order of magnitude than other fabrics, as its name implies.

Additionally, the entire fabric has undergone durable water repellent treatment. Durable water repellent (DWR) treatment involves applying a silicone coating to the surface of the fabric which causes water to bead and be repelled. Even though the fibers are coated, the spaces between threads and between stitches are not completely blocked, giving it the advantage of allowing air and moisture to pass through and keeping things cool and dry on the inside.

The fabric is manufactured by Kaji Group, a synthetic fiber manufacturer founded in 1934 in Ishikawa prefecture. Using the processing techniques for long synthetic fiber threads which they have cultivated for many years, they achieve very thin, light, and strong fabrics. In recent years they have worked on many fabrics for well known sports and outdoor brands.

*About water repellent and waterproof Water repellent treatment is a treatment to “repel” water, while waterproofing treatment is a treatment to “not allow drops of water through.”

Water repellent treatment refers to the application of a silicone coating to the surface of the fabric which causes water to bead and be repelled. Even though the fibers are coated, the spaces between threads and stitches are not completely blocked, allowing air and moisture to pass through.
For this reason, products with water repellent treatment have the advantage of staying cool and dry inside. However, in a light drizzle with small raindrops or in heavy rain, the water can sometimes soak into the fabric. It is not able to completely repel the water and is inferior to waterproofing treatment when it comes to protecting against water.

Waterproofing treatment refers to the use of fabric materials which are themselves made of vinyl chloride or synthetic rubber, or the coating of a fabric in paraffin to close up any interstitial spaces.
It protects completely against water seepage or soaking and will not allow even heavy rain to get through. Unlike water repellent treatment, there are no interstitial spaces in the fabric, so air and moisture are not able to pass through it, giving it a tendency to become stuffy and humid on the inside.
