The stance we always have in mind as a maker engaged in manufacturing.
It is to create things that can be used as long as possible.
In making something new using limited resources and energy, it is important
to give consideration to the environment from various angles like adopting
durable materials and building a system for maintenance and repair, as well
as improving functions.
One of the products we have always had on our mind is “slippers”.
In many hotels and inside airplanes, disposable non-woven slippers are used
from a hygienic point of view. Also, at homes, fabric slippers are mainly used
but they seem to be easily damaged as they get dirty, broken frayed and worn
into a hole. Though depending on the frequency of use, some people buy new
ones every season.
As a matter of fact, slippers originated in Japan around 1900, after the Meiji
Restoration. After Japan’s opening up the country, a lot of people came back
and forth from the West and slippers are said to have been created for guests
who didn’t have the custom of taking off shoes indoors to be able to spend a
Based on these backgrounds, we decided that cowhide is the best material
for THE SLIPPERS, which are durable and suitable for hospitality.
Of all, we selected especially strong hide from adult cows around 2 or 3 years old. By making especially thick cowhide into rich three-layer structures― outsole, insole and upper―, it becomes strong and durable.
We perform a process called tanning on leather to make it soft. As the hide, cut out from animals as it is, is easy to become rotten and hard when dried, we make medicine penetrate it and make the leather stable in the process. For tanning of THE SLIPPERS, we use plant-derived, water-soluble liquid medicine (tannin) instead of chemicals. By making tannin penetrate deep into the fiber of the hide carefully, the leather can be flexible and hard to become deteriorated.
As a natural material, leather has a disadvantage that there are inequalities depending on the cow of the hide and its part, wrinkles, grains and how the scratches come out.
So, we deliberately dyed these slippers black instead of tan leather ( brown
leather without being dyed). We made these products uniform as much as possible and made them have individual differences as little as possible. They can be used for a long time with the change called aging, which is characteristic of leather.
As one of the characteristics of leather, the more it is used, not only its look
but also the texture changes. At first, it feels hard but gradually it becomes soft and stretches and becomes familiar with your feet.
We found something very interesting as we made numerous trial pre-products.
When we sewed along with the shape of upper using the leather that has
over a certain thickness, the toe parts went up seen from the side.
When we actually tried wearing them, the shape fitted the feet very well,
making it easier to walk.
It was the new function of thick leather selected for THE SLIPPERS. It has
the unique and special combination of materials and the shape, which cannot
be usually found in thin leather.
For the entire sole of the foot, a shock-absorbing material made of urethane, which is also used for camera bags, is used. It works as a shoe insole to make feet less tired and cushions the shock, making the slippers easier to wear.
In addition, what we have once again realized is the difficulty of treating
While THE SLIPPERS have the shape of a sharp curve, they have partly cut
edges with three-layered thick leather. So, high skill is required in the process of sewing and polishing. We have decided that it is in particular the sophistication of the treatment of cut edges that affects the preparation of leather the most.
We have asked SEASAW CORPORATION to produce them. The company is highly skilled at making bags and shoes made of leather. Their proficient
knowledge and flexible preparedness to challenge new manufacturing can only make it possible to realize the high quality like leather products in Europe.
Also, only for these slippers, we have been making efforts to import the dedicated coating agent, which has never been distributed in Japan. As it has higher viscosity than that generally distributed in Japan, the leather comes out with matte finish, more uniform and beautiful texture.
Combined with everything like materials, shapes, functions, the environment and the history, new slippers that can be used for decades, which are just like THE, were born.
